Su questo promettente nuovo sito dedicato alla fotografia contemporanea, il saggio della Cotton, autrice anche dell'eccellente libretto "The Photograph as Contemporary Art" recita:
..But it is definitely more hit-and-miss for a photographer working in black-and-white to anticipate whether or not the full meaning and contemporary relevance of their imagery will be understood in light of color art photography’s dominance. At the beginning of this millennium, I found it difficult to keep my confidence that photography’s monochrome history continued to exert a strong influence on the way we see...
A career-oriented art photographer (and maybe this is the first generation of artists who can consider it a “career”) sticks very close to the now well-traveled path of contemporary color photography’s aesthetic homage and partial remembrance of, for example, gorgeous Kodachrome, or the beam of an enlarger. In a career-oriented era, perhaps this strategy is wiser than trying to beat a path through the resistance to presenting imagery in other ways and forms that actually respond to the potential of digitization. Of course I feel bemused at why a nascent art photographer would be so openly conservative as to adhere to apparent conventions, and at my most pessimistic, I wonder if there’s too much “trying-to-be-like” Eggleston, Shore, et al., and too little “creative-departure-from” the stellar standards that they have set...
Che sia corretta o meno nelle sue previsioni, o giustificabile nei suoi entusiasmi, questa è tutta un'altra questione. Di certo si tratta di una lettura provocatoria, e penso che molti fotografi tradizionalisticamente analogici e figurativi, compreso il digitalissimo sottoscritto, forse non approveranno alcune delle sue scelte di bianco e nero contemporaneo. E, malgrado personalmente ami anch'io visionare o produrre quello che si potrebbe definire
fotografia a colori contemporanea, sono abbastanza consapevole del fatto che esistano ulteriori direzioni da esplorare col bianco e nero...
Sarà inoltre interessante vedere se questo nuovo revival del bianco e nero prenderà davvero mai piede. Francamente ci sono anche alcuni fotografi dell'era pre-colori degli anni '70 che realizzavano progetti meno narrativi e più grafici, più simili alla serie
The New Scent di Jason Evans. Se mai il Bianco e nero prendesse di nuovo piede, rivitalizzarà anche il mercato delle pellicole, della camera oscura tradizionale, etc. etc. oppure la sua resurrezione rimarrà, come credo, totalmente digitale?
Infine mi chiedo come possa evolvere l'arte visuale che amo di più dalla propria intrinseca ancestrale derivatività nell'era della manipolazione teconolgica, ma questa e tutta un'altra storia, che spero di poter coprire con un apposito articolo appena possibile...
