De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté (2005)

Why did I like this 2005 French movie so much, when I am told it is too derivative and predictable?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411270/

Yesterday night we watched this movie at my friend's house, and tonight I dreamt of it and became conscious of what I am now writing down.

First of all, I love the movie making style: film editing is top notch, but also photography and music seem to be used on purpose to render my own personal nonlinear, neurotic and recurrent way of seeing reality.

Then, the story is, With a drama fingerprint, a very positive one indeed, telling of an individual (Tom) who realize a very important change in life: from a cr@p life devoted to easy money, always around evicting poor people With baseball bats, to a sensitive life devoted to love and art.

In bullets:
- The story analyzes the relation between father and son: the movie starts With Tom's friend outing about the inversion of roles when fathers get old, and it ends With the beating-up of the Russian con artist which both avenges Toms' dad and definitely close a cycle in Tom's life.

- Tom in the beginning is a high performance professional, but he is anxious and unbearably neurotic… and he still suffers an Oedipus complex for his dead mother… Thus Tom initially fully incarnates the projection of his father into the business world, and he ends by transforming himself to become like his mother's former lover (and manager): such a change in life seems possible right through the psychological switch of parental referral model.

- The episode of Tom who rediscovers his own way of expression through a person who does not speak his language at all is romantic for me, albeit quite predictable. He can achieve that through an art, music, which will turn into his the turning point of his life.

- Finally, Tom is able to find his own dimension. He can both express his sensitivity and his relational ability which imply a clear managing and business attitude.

The fact that director Jacques Audiard was able to render this illuminating progression of events using a filming language which is also my language explains my enthusiasm about this movie ; - )
Am I too cerebral?

I've not been posting for quite a long, but what the hell am I doing lately? Where am I going?

Well.... it's just because of good news: my new project, "NO EXIT", which is being developed these days With Nadia and Lea (two young curators working in Roma) who are planning another exposition of mine...

That's whay I am working so hard all nights to write down the concept, the descriptions and all the paperworks needed to get money from the sponsors, etc etc etc

More news to come soon. Hopefully good news ; - )

Yesterday I did my first studio shooting for an art dealer friend of mine. The only requirement was not to be too creative in order to show off the artwork discreetly.

When I first saw those pieces I thought: "Oh my, this is really boring $hit...". So results are boring, but my client today called me back only to tell: "hey davide, you made those works better in pictures than in reality!". Yep, thanks a lot for your kind words, but I cannot figure out how those swindlers can sell such crap works for at least 5 thousands bucks each!!!!!

Most of these works are paintings from famous sculptors or sculptures from famous painters ; - ) Good luck my dear friend...

Jackson Pollock was an American painter and a major force in the abstract expressionist movement (see wiki). But, if you want to enjoy the emotion of creating your own Pollock painting, then dive into http://www.jacksonpollock.org/ and do it yourself!

Time is not only a constraint, it represents the reason to a change. Thus, attempting to understand the nature of Time has always been a prime occupation for philosophers and scientists. But from a photographer perspective, time is both a lapse and a loop: have look at http://www.theircircularlife.it/ and choose your pace for your life ;-O

Yesterday it was the second cultural happening at the house of a very close friend of mine: we use to meet there to watch a movie and discuss it almost every week.

On our first evening, I had the chance to have an absent look at 1933 "She done him wrong" With Mae West... absolutely too far away from my vision, my way of thinking, my way of seeing reality, making imageries or way of shooting movies. : - (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024548/

Yesterday we saw Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" and... wow, what a great, inspiring and important movie. I had watched that movie almost 20 years ago, when I was a stupid young teenager, but now, in my middle age lifetime walk, I enjoy all of it: the story, the melancoly and sadness, the good looking women and the over-the-top useless parties of perdition...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053779/

Fellini has become utterly famous, most of all, for his outstanding ability to render stories and facts that barely exist on screen, always in between reality and dreams, lights and shadows, just as the Rome of movie starlets and the Pope. Everything is abstracted like in a dream. Every story is the good one for making a movie.

Summertime, the sun is high.
She's in the mood to love the guy.

And we go down slowly,
as we go down slowly.

Afternoon, chill With ease.
I want some more of
your cootchy tease.

As we go down slowly.
And we go down slowly.

[ I ] said, [ I ] love that girl,
she's all I need.
A natural high, she's giving me.

As we go down slowly.
And we go down slowly.

Earth to touch...
And air to ride...

Slowly.
Slowly.

Love, ah-huh, ow.
Love, ah-huh, ow.

Ecstasy is in the air.

With the Web it (the radio) has become an asynchronous medium. We can find all kinds of archived audio streams on the Web. And ‘radio’ now includes pictures and video streams and statistics and print. Print itself has exploded through the Web. In the mid-20th century people were predicting that print, the written text as an object of thought, was obsolete. Look at how the written text has exploded With the WWW and blogs! Artists always have to look to new media for opportunities to reach audiences, but media considered old and obsolete are also being revitalized. Look at television. Television is being abandoned by audiences who seek more control over programming. Maybe the time will come for television to be programmed by artists!
Marcel Duchamp critiqued painting as a mindless activity early in the 20th century. He advocated for an art of intent and concept. I don’t think Duchamp was arguing against visual sensuality or pleasure, but he was pointing out that art is fundamentally a philosophical discipline. Philosophical discourse is not restricted to pretty pictures. Ideas are not limited to visual images. 21st century culture and art involves a full spectrum of sensual information, including highly coded languages transmitted and received by machines across networks. Sure we still read most of the world through our eyes, but it is absurd to think that art and aesthetics are limited to beautiful images. Concept and context and data and information come in all kinds of textures and frequencies.

Here we go again With yet another Magnum-Photos a-la-Henri-Cartier-Bresson photographer on display in Modena this winter: just 2 large rooms With 3 dozens of big catchy colorful prints from Asia and a lot of rumbling people in the overheated gallery.

Different from many contemporary photojournalists who tend to "machine gun" their subjects, Steve McCurry immediately distinguished himself for his vivid personal way of seeing reality and by taking his time to slow down, wait for the right light, and know his subjects well before taking timeless shots of vibrant life.

The results are outstanding stunningly saturated portraits of people, places and moods, be them happy tribal dances or lands devastated by a war. Every single image vibrantly speaks both of the portrayed situations (be it in Afghanistan or in Tibet) and of its author at the same time: this is what I call the absolute reportage photography.

Afgan girl Kuwait

Thus a fairly straightforward exposition, easy to be understood by the general public and light years far from the conceptual contemporary art, but nevertheless inspiring as a unique vision of reality and beauty.

A woman, pictured from behind. She is on her knees on a bed, With just tights on, and her hands are gracefully cuffed to the bed head. Light is harsh, framing is well balanced and only apparently unkempt. Her expression is vaguely morbid, a typical image from the fetish mainstream of the 70s, and its soft-porn magazines.

This scene is taken from Bettina Rheims' first monograph, "Female Trouble", featuring portraits of women, published in 1989.

After having been a model, a journalist, and opening an art gallery, she began to be a photographer in 1978 at the age of 26. Bettina Rheims is an intriguing photographer of women.
Obsessed, sweet, sexy, candid, conscious, expressive, joyfully erotic, her photographs represent explicit and metaphoric exposition of crude sensuality, which incidently has to pass through nudity and typical male stereotypes. Nevertheless, the strong iconic tendency of these pictures transforms models into true symbols of an unbiased and mythic femininity, full of vitality and eros.

Have a look at her "Female Trouble" as soon as you can. It deserves it.

Last week I had a shooting to an Opera produced by my friend (and singer) Luca Gallo (http://www.lucagallo.com). "Il Macco" is an "opera buffa" by the nearly unknown Italian composer Ferdinando Ranuzzi. It was played only very few times With good critics back when it was composed in mid-19th century. Then the traces of "Il Macco" and its composer are nearly lost, and music sheets were thought lost until only recently discovered by a descendant of Ferdinando Ranuzzi inside an old cellar. A local non-for-profit art guild recovered the music sheets and orchestrated the return to play.

Music was really catchy, lyrics quite amusing and production was top level.

Ok, here they go again: another couple of friends asked for my help in producing their graduation thesis lately. This fall the first one is just yet another private survey, but the second one is an interesting real project by a friend who is preparing a feasibility report for a post graduation school for art-curator wannabes. The project's subject is "The relation between architecture and art in contemporary visual culture".

Location for the exposition is given and maximum budget is less than 6 grands, insurance included : - (

Any help is appreciated, expecially great concepts that are cheap to realise, and a list of inexpensive services for expositors available to a big city in central Italy... Please write to me privately if you wish to contribute.

News will follow Within Christmas, and my friend's project might also be produced for real by her art school ; - )

Google buys Gapminder, a graphical display company
By Matt Marshall 03.19.07 7:58 AM

Google has acquired Swedish non-profit company Gapminder that produces visually attractive graphics to display facts, figures, and statistics in presentations.
See the site's new home page for an example of what it does, which includes moving graphics and other effects. Hans Rosling, a scientist who led the company, gives an entertaining presentation of the company's offerings at TED. He explains how important public data from UN, government institutions and universities has been hidden in the basement of databases, but that it not been available on the Web in a search format, and that is what Gapminder, as a non-profit had been trying to pursue. The TED audience was clearly moved, and we can only assume some Googlers in the audience likely recommended the purchase. Notably, only software and the Web site were sold to Google, and Rosling apparently didn't get a dime.
Swivel, you'll recall is another San Francisco start-up that lets users play With statistics, and encourages the use of graphics. The company launched last year, after working on its technology for a year. Depending on what Google does With this, Swivel may be forced to focus on its paid version, for sale to companies that want to keep their data private.

Da hebig invece leggo:
Hans Rosling selling Gapminder to Google
posted on 19. March 2007 at 08:47 PM

Venture Beat has the story: Google buys Gapminder.
This is cool. Gapminder was founded by the very smart and entertaining Hans Rosling who has delivered outstanding presentations at several high-level conferences including TED and WEF. Loic also invited Rosling to speak at the LeWeb3 conference in Paris where I was so fortunate to see him present live. At the recent TED07 he even swallowed a sword on stage; I guess that impressed the Google founders who were also present at the conference. Note that Rosling didn't cash in With this transaction as Gapminder (the software) is developed by a non-profit foundation. More details on the story here.

- Pro: vulgarizzare servizi vuol dire diffondere democraticamente conoscenza in modo gratuito, o quasi.
- Contro: banalizzare tecnologie a volte causa l'impoverirne l'accuratezza informativa.

After having recovered a bit, I spent a dozen of days wandering through Ireland With a couple of good friends of mine, and still some traces of cortisone flooding thorugh my blood.
On Aug 13 we were in typical Irish Pub in Kenmere, when an elderly man was drinking his Guinness beer. Nothing special so far, but he sometimes took out of his pocket an old folded and over thorn photography of a lady. He unfolded the picture and kept on staring at her and even sometimes talking or sobbing... What a scene! After a couple of minutes he normally folded the photograph back to his pocket and swallowed another sip of his dark oblivion drink. Then he went to the loo, he got back to his seat and orderd yet another beer...

... I'll write about it someday, but not today since I got something else more urgent at the moment ; - )

(2) 07 - 23 - 2006
Yesterday I was diagnosed a bad pneumonia (Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia - BOOP): it is good it is absolutely curable, but it is bad since potentially fatal and, in my case, originated by a very common "Commonly acquired pneumona - CAP" that has not been identified and cured for several months, too many months acutally, till the inevitable final breakdown.

The good news is that I can be cured With a 99% probability to practically fully recover. Well, well well, the even greater news is that today I am quitting smoking, after 20 years of insane numbers of cigarettes a day...

Me, smoking

Me, coughing

I am surprised that my prints sell. They’re not pretty, they’re not those kind of pictures that people easily put on their walls, they’re not that window onto a nice landscape or something. They aren’t.

I don’t have pictures in my head, you know. Look, I am stuck With my own psychology. With my own, uh, With me. So I’m sure that there’s some kind of thread, whatever, but I don’t have pictures in my head.

lumache bavose
e gechi orbettini
restate lontani
dai nostri bambini.
Voi bestie notturne
amanti del buio
Voi che non dormite
se non al mattino
vegliate sul sonno
di questo bambino.
L'originale filastrocca shakespeariana suona invece più o meno così:
You spotted snakes With double tounge,
Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen;
Newts and blind-worms, do no wrong,
Come not near our fairy queen.

Philomel, With melody,
Singy in our sweet melody,
Lulla, lulla, lullaby; lulla, lulla, lullaby;
Never harm, nor spell, nor charm,
Come our lovely lady nigh;
So goodnight, With lullaby.

Weaving spiders, come not here;
Hence you long-legg'd spinners, hence!
Beetles black, approach not near;
Worm nor snail, do no offence. II ii 9-23

PHOTO MARTIN PARR/MAGNUM PHOTOS

“All the boundaries are collapsing. One of the things that’s interesting about flickr, is that it’s probably emerged as the most intelligent photo-sharing site - it’s become the brand leader. And what will happen With flickr is that Within five years it will start licensing pictures. In other words, they’ll be part of the Getty Corbis machinery…the agencies are concerned about this. It’s something we discuss at Magnum…”

“…Within five years flickr will emerge as one of the major sources for licensing imagery…”

“…the other point about flickr, is I can’t tell you how bad the most of the pictures are. I mean, we see this in the site up there (at Musee de L’Elysee) the noise of this contemporary photography is relentless and ultimately, nullifyingly boring.”

“…we have this amazing interest, resurgence in photography, a renaissance, but boy do we have to wade through a lot of rubbish in order to get to anything half-decent.”

“…the best business model is to have fantastic pictures, that have a unique vision and say something different. And you get away from the turgid quantities of cliches and propaganda which we see not only surrounding our lives, but we also see in the exhibition here.”

“…I’m totally in favor of flickr. I haven’t spent enough time trawling through flickr to find the new stars who may be emerging on flickr itself…”

“… but the last thing I’m going to do - is looking at flickr for my stars of the future.”

“I come back to this individual voice in homogenized times. Connecting With a subject matter, doing it With passion, resolving a set of pictures, coming out With a personal statement - there’s always going to be room for that, because we still, whatever the process, whatever the method, we still need stories that touch us as human beings.”

Scarica l'intervista in formato mp3

JUST SAY NO TO FAMILY VALUES

On a day when
you're walking
down the street
and you see
a hearse
With a coffin,
followed by
a flower car
and limos,
you know the day
is auspicious,
your plans are going to be
successful;
but on a day when
you see a bride and groom
and wedding party,
watch out,
be careful,
it might be a bad sign.

Just say no
to family values,
and don't quit
your day job.

Drugs
are sacred
substances,
and some drugs
are very sacred substances,
please praise them
for somewhat liberating
the mind.

Tobacco
is a sacred substance
to some,
and even though you've
stopped smoking,
show a little respect.

Alcohol
is totally great,
let us celebrate
the glorious qualities
of booze,
and I had
a good time
being With you.

Just
do it,
just do it
just don't
not do it,
do it.

Christian
Fundamentalists,
and fundamentalists
in general,
are viruses,
and they're killing us,
multiplying
and mutating,
and they destroying us,
now, you know,
you got to give
strong medicine
to combat
a virus.

Who's buying?
good acid,
I'm flying,
slipping
and sliding,
slurping
and slamming,

I'm sinking,
dipping
and dripping,
and squirting
inside you;
never
fast forward
a cum shot;
milk, milk,
lemonade,
round the corner
where the chocolate's made;
I love to see
your face
when you're suffering.

Do it
With anybody
you want,
whatever
you want,
for as long as you want,
any place,
any place,
when it's possible,
and try to be
safe;
in a situation where
you must abandon
yourself
completely
beyond all concepts.

Just say no
to family
values.

We don't have to say No
to family values,
cause we never
think about them;
just
do it,
just make
love
and compassion.

John Giorno, 1995

Cosa presentare? Ecco i pleonastici loro consigli:

A spray-painted fence, a wall flaky With peeling stucco, a paper bag in the wind, a broken sign: strange, moving, disturbing, witty, banal, or anywhere in between.

Newspapers yesterday reported that in the UK the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it had received dozens of complaints from people who objected to seeing the banner ads from the latest campaign by Domenico Dolce e Stefano Gabbana, since they are considered too violent for a general public: http://www.kataweb.it/multimedia/media/522278

Images from the 2006/2007 campaign are visible navigating through here: http://ita.dolcegabbana.it/dolcegabbana.asp (click slideshow).
They are really boring modern reinterpretations of uninspiring classics from the 19th century, depicting murders and suicides. I don't actually know if those pictures were taken by the great photographer Steven Meisel based on directions from Domenico Dolce himself as the gay-friendly underwear campaign last year, but the overall concept of the 2007 campaign is far from being original, even though it has been perfectly and proficiently executed.

It is an undoubted fact that those dull artworks are hung at least all over Europe, but a public moaning of supposed violence incitation is reported only in the UK so far. Yes, those pictures possess their own visual coherence and an impact which fit them well inside their own series, but we are definitively not in face of such a memorable piece of creativity, if not because of that same censure attitude from Great Britain.

All this reminds me of a leading creative and second-rate photographer whose name is Oliviero Toscani. Less than ten years ago he stated his own decline by challenging the American way of thinking. Through his usual dull photographic style, he managed to obtain the final brave combination of social matters and pullovers by portraiting the human expressions of death sentenced men waiting their day in the death row (http://www.repubblica.it/online/societa/toscani/toscani/toscani.html). That campaign raised so many protests that some federal states sued Luciano Benetton in person, and even sensitive (or desperate?) housewives fell in love of the portraited jail-birds... Then, it was not censure but Luciano himself who immediately Withdrew the ads, he surely hardly hit himself in his guts, and he finally understood that in order to continue to seriously affect the Italian economy he should have diversified his businesses. Thus he ended With buying Societ Autostrade (the national motorway company) now on sale.

I do sincerely hope that our dear D&G will have a brighter future, so they won't reinvent their business ruining, let's say, Trenitalia o Alitalia which is actually on sale now as well

Photograph © Lee Friedlander for The New York Times

This is a portrait of composer and muscian Ornette Colemen who just won the Pulitzer Prize for composition. Here is the mention from The New York Times (16 April 07): "Mr. Coleman, the 77-year-old jazz saxophonist and composer, won for 'Sound Grammar,' a live album by his most recent quartet, recorded in 2005. Elastic and bracing, With two acoustic basses and much collective improvisation, the music harks back to the 1960s records that made him famous. 'I’m tearing and I’m surprised and happy — and I’m glad I’m an American,' he said. 'And I’m glad to be a human being who’s a part of making American qualities more eternal.'" More from The Times and npr.

This new album is really terrific - a live recording from 2005. But Coleman has been making wild, frenetic, and soulful music since the late 1950s and is is truly wonderful to see him, a true innovator, recognized for his contributions. You can find a nice essay on Coleman (a bit dated but still worth reading) by the great jazz critic Francis Davis reprinted here.

SELF PORTRAIT - PHOTO DUANE MICHALS

"SYNCHRONICITY" ALBUM COVER (THE POLICE, 1983) - PHOTO DUANE MICHALS

Poi ho incrociato questo post su una presentazione di questo "mostro sacro" alla libreria Strand di New York - su The View from the Edge of the Universe - e non ho resistito dal riportare alcune citazioni di Michals che, a 75 anni, dice pane al pane e vino al vino:

"I've always relied on the kindness of ideas"

"Everything you think makes sense doesn't. Get out of the fuckin' box."

"My gift to you is that I'm not you"

"As long as you believe in consensus reality, you will never experience true reality"

"What a cheap joint, I have to do my own slides" .... and .... "Jesus, what do I have to do to get fucked around here"

"You are the alpha, the omega. You are the event"

"You affect what you see through the participation of your observations"

"Have you ever thought about the not-nowness of now?"

"I love to photograph what cannot be seen"

"Reality is not a set of observable facts walking down the street."

"Photography is not about looking, its about feeling"

"Can you imagine defining your life so narrowly that Nirvana is sex With 72 virgins"

"Someone just paid $3 million for a Gursky. $2.5 million I can see, but 3?"

"You should always be a beginner"

"I love ideas I've never thought of before"
